The purpose of this Association is to inspire Sisters of Mercy and their Associates to incarnate the spirit o Catherine McAuley  in ways which are creative and appropriate to the needs of our time and to foster unity of mind and heart among Sisters of Mercy worldwide.

Episode Three

Our guest for our third episode is Sr. Mary Trainer rsm from Philadelphia, USA.

Sr. Mary Trainer entered the Sisters of Mercy in 1958. Initially she taught elementary schools and an inner city highschool. In 1972 she was invited to be part of the Community Renewal Team whose task was to facilitate the transition to Vatican II with a focus on the charism of Catherine Mc Auley.

Subsequently she earned a doctorate in Social Psychology from Boston University, and a certificate in Spiritual Direction from Shalem Institute. During the 1980’s she served as a member of the Leadership Team of the Sisters of Mercy Philadelphia.

In 1998, Mary became the founding director of Cranaleith Spiritual Center, whose mission is to welcome all those seeking wholeness and transformation for themselves andsociety. Grounded in the spirituality of Mercy, the Center is committed to providing accessibility to those on the margins.

Currently Mary is semi-retired. She engages part-time in the ministry of spiritual direction and directed retreats, occasionally accompanying persons seeking a deeper grounding in the charism of mercy.

Mary was instrumental to the work that took place in the 1990s to bring Mercy International Centre to life.

Mary spoke to Brenda about her life and ministry and shared some of her memories of bringing the visions and dreams of so many Mercy People to life in the 1990s.

Mary also reflected on the importance of the work done in helping to preserve 64a Lower Baggot Street as a wellspring of Mercy and as a unifying presence in the Mercy World.

She also reflected on getting to know the real face of Mercy around the world during that process and how she took Catherine and her letters with her in every piece of work that was done in Mercy International Centre.
