Celebrating Mercy Day 2026 at Monte Sant' Angelo College in Sydney

On Friday 18th September, the Monte Sant' Angelo Mercy College community in North Sydney came together for its vibrant annual celebration of Mercy Day. Beginning with Mass, presided by Father Ramesh Richards SJ and the dramatic animation of the Gospel’s Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy by students, this year’s theme of Mercy through Service set the rich foundation of the day.

The presentation of Student, Staff and Alumni Awards for those in our community who put these shared values into action each day, became a prelude to the honouring of the enduring legacy and guiding vision of the Sisters of Mercy, North Sydney; being inspired by faith to provide an education of excellence, significance, and purpose for young women and girls. 

A proud highlight was presenting Sue Johns (Class of 1962) with the 2026 Catherine McAuley Alumna Mercy Award for decades of dedication to education, the pioneering of computer studies at Monte, as well as many decades of mathematics teaching, mentoring and community service.

Later in the day, staff, students and special guests facilitated a wide range of diverse interactive workshops focused on global advocacy, social justice, creative expression, and hands-on service. 

Mercy Day’s special significance is further heightened by the college community bidding a fond farewell to the graduating Year 12 cohort, celebrating their leadership, contributions, and journey through Monte.  

Ms Alice Priest, Coordinator of Mercy Day reflected, "Mercy Day always reminds us of who we are and who we are called to be. Saying goodbye to Year 12 makes Mercy Day incredibly emotional and special. Seeing how much those students have grown and built a sense of community during their time at the college, leading by example as young Mercy women set to take on the world beyond Monte, inspires the rest of us to carry that legacy forward."
