The Océanie cast anchor in St Mary’s Bay, Auckland about 5pm that evening. Some of the Sisters were novices and postulants.
On the following day, 9 April 1850, Mother Cecilia and her Sister companions left the little ship which had been their home for almost eight months to step onto the white sands of St Mary’s Bay and then to walk in procession to the Cathedral of Ss Patrick and Joseph. They were greeted by both Maori and settlers, Irish and other European immigrants. At the Cathedral, Thanksgiving prayers and Benediction were said. After refreshments in a schoolroom, the Sisters then went to their temporary accommodation which was in the Cathedral grounds.
