Artistic Response: New Foundations in Mercy
Sophie Snowball (Great Britain Federation): 'Plastic Coated'
This piece of artwork was produced in response to a starting point of “Messages”.
My interpretation of this title was to convey something important and culturally profound that applied to a wide audience. Over recent years, the impact of single-use plastics has become very apparent, with our sea and marine life suffering as a result of humanity's inability to curb its use of this material.
I live in a coastal city and therefore the beach and its environments are very important to me, especially their cleanliness and safeguarding. My artwork is designed to make people question how they use and— more importantly— how they are disposing of their plastic waste.
I would like to try and educate further those who cannot see or are blind to its detrimental impact. The image of a fish has been made from found materials, illustrating the good that can come from appropriate use of waste or plastics. It also reflects the beauty of our natural wildlife, no matter where you may live around the world.

Sophie was a final year student at St. Anthony's Girls' Catholic Academy in Sunderland, England in 2019 when she produced this artwork.
